Why We Only Offer Full-Day Charters

At Magic Sportfishing, we are the only charter company that does not offer half-day or 3/4-day charters (4–6 hours). Our main priority is giving you the best possible chance to catch a trophy fish—or even better, multiple trophy fish. Achieving this is incredibly difficult in a short 4-to-6-hour window.

While other companies run 2 to 3 short trips a day to maximize their own profits, we focus on one exceptional trip per day. We want our clients to return to the dock happy and satisfied. We achieve this by maximizing your time in Hawaii’s most abundant fishing spots, giving you more time in the fighting chair battling big game fish.

The Math Behind the Magic: Depth and Distance

Most big-game pelagic fish—including Marlin, Ahi (Yellowfin Tuna), Ono (Wahoo), Mahi Mahi, and Skipjack Tuna—congregate in deep waters where fresh open-ocean currents run and water temperatures are cooler. This is where baitfish school up, and where the trophy predators come to feed. These bountiful feeding grounds sit on the 500-fathom ledge out to the 2,000-fathom ledge. To reach them, we travel to two main areas starting from Kewalo Basin Harbor:

• The West/Waianae Coast: Curving out past Barbers Point (approx. 15 miles away).
• The South (BO FAD / Fish Aggregating Device): Located approximately 17 miles away.

At trolling speed travel time to these productive spots takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way. On an 8-to-10-hour full-day charter, this transit time leaves the captain and crew a solid 4 to 5 hours of active fishing time right in the strike zone. On a 4-hour charter, reaching these spots makes it barely possible. On a 6-hour charter, your actual fishing time in the best spots is cut down to a meager 2 hours.

Double the Tide Changes, Double the Chances

Ocean tides change approximately every 6 hours, and fish tend to bite best during these tide shifts.

• Our Full-Day Charters (8–10 hours): Give us enough time to fish through two tide changes, doubling your chances of a strike.
• Short Charters (4–6 hours): Only catch one tide change at best, severely limiting your window of opportunity.
